- Mother calls for lessons to raise children’s awareness
The mother of a British girl who died while imitating a social media challenge called for children to be educated about the dangers of household toxic substances.
Sonia Hopkin lost her 13-year-old daughter, Tiegan Jarman, who was found unresponsive in her bedroom in Thurmaston on March 6, after taking part in an online challenge known as “chroming,” copying videos she had seen on TikTok.
The girl’s family launched a petition demanding mandatory lessons in schools on the dangers of toxic substance exposure.
Hopkin, who works as a healthcare assistant, said her “energetic” daughter participated in this trend, where participants inhale toxic fumes from household substances, which led to her immediate death.
She added: “When you read stories like this in the newspapers, you always think it’s another family, never your own. It was a true nightmare. I’ve been heartbroken ever since.”
Hopkin said she now wants to raise awareness of the dangers of this hazardous challenge, calling for school lessons to cover not only household chemical risks but also internet dangers.
She also urged strict warnings on toxic substance packaging to prevent similar incidents.
Additionally, she called on TikTok to take stronger measures to prevent dangerous challenges from spreading.
The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association stated that products already carry warnings and announced that a new message clarifying the risks will be introduced by 2026.
A TikTok spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. Content promoting dangerous challenges is prohibited on our platform, and we proactively removed 99.8% of violating videos before they were reported. Searches for this challenge are blocked, and we found no evidence that it ever became a trend on our platform.”
