San Francisco witnessed a unique moment this week, as a woman gave birth inside a self-driving Waymo vehicle during her trip to one of the city's hospitals.

According to the company that owns the vehicle, the baby was born in the back seat of the car, and the mother and her newborn arrived safely at the hospital.

The company's team explained that the remote support systems detected unusual activity during the trip, prompting them to contact the mother and verify her safety, while coordinating the arrival of emergency services.

On her part, Jess Berthold, spokesperson for the University of California, San Francisco Hospital, confirmed that the mother and her child arrived safely at the hospital.

In a social media post, Waymo said: "A woman in labor requested a car to head to the hospital, but she was surprised by her newborn in the back seat. Some moments simply cannot wait until the first ride." The company added that the vehicle was temporarily taken out of service for cleaning.

A company spokesperson noted: "We are proud to be a reliable means of transport in both the smallest and greatest moments. We congratulate the new family and look forward to continuing to safely transport our passengers through all stages of their lives."
