A collision involving more than 100 vehicles and their sliding off the highway occurred in the U.S. state of Michigan due to a snowstorm that made driving conditions "treacherous" for motorists, according to local authorities.
The Michigan State Police closed Interstate 196 in both directions, southwest of Grand Rapids, while crews worked to clear the vehicles, including more than 30 large trucks and trailers.
Police reported multiple injuries from the crashes, but none are considered "fatal" so far.
Photos and videos posted on social media and local media outlets showed trucks and other vehicles piled up along the snow-covered highway.
This incident comes amid the effects of the severe winter storm sweeping across the United States, with the National Weather Service issuing warnings of extremely low temperatures and potential winter storms across several states, from northern Minnesota through Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
Pedro Mata Jr., a motorist, said that he could barely see the cars ahead while snow drifted across the road, driving at speeds between 32 and 40 km/h before the pile-up occurred.
He added that he had to stop his truck and pull it to the median to avoid a rear-end collision.
Officials urged drivers to slow down and exercise caution in these "dangerous" conditions, as the storm continues to dump snow on the region, with temperatures expected to drop to -22°C, including wind chill.
Weather experts also warned of the possibility of a nighttime freeze extending across north-central Florida and southeastern Georgia.
