  • Feature aims to make starting conversations faster without opening each chat

WhatsApp is currently working on a new feature designed to make it easier to see which contacts are active on the app, helping conversations happen more quickly and smoothly, a tech newspaper reported.

The report indicates that the feature will allow users to view a list of contacts who are currently online in real time, without needing to open individual chats.

In the beta version 2.26.13.3 on Android, WhatsApp is testing an activity indicator at the top of the app within a dedicated settings section. This will let users see which contacts are currently available, with options to sort them by name or online status.

The list may also include people the user has interacted with in groups but has not yet saved in their contacts, making it easier to add them quickly.

The app will respect privacy settings: users who hide their “last seen” or online status will not appear in the list unless they are actively online, while those who hide their online status entirely will not appear at all. This ensures a balance between usability and privacy protection.

The feature promises a smoother experience, allowing users to start conversations with active contacts directly, without browsing through individual chats.

It is expected that the feature will be officially released in future updates after testing is complete.
