Authorities in Polk County, Florida, reported that a man shot and killed his wife and injured his stepdaughter before turning the gun on himself.
The incident reportedly erupted over watching a football match.
County Sheriff Grady Judd said during a press conference: "As you know, every murder is painful, but it becomes even more tragic when it occurs around the holidays, and what I’m about to describe is ten times worse."
According to authorities, Jason Kenney, 47, was watching the San Francisco 49ers game in his cabin in Highland City, Lakeland.
When he wanted to continue watching the end of the match on the living room TV, his wife Crystal Kenney refused, sparking an argument.
The sheriff added: "I told Crystal’s 12-year-old son to call 911, so the boy ran to a neighbor’s house, and as he was leaving, he heard gunfire."
Upon entering the home, police found Crystal dead from a gunshot to the head, while her 13-year-old stepdaughter was shot in the shoulder and face and was transported to the hospital in critical but stable condition.
The sheriff noted that Jason Kenney fired at his stepdaughter twice intending to kill her but did not hit his one-year-old biological child, nor did he have the chance to shoot his other son who ran to call emergency services.
Kenney fled the scene before police arrived, contacted his sister in New York saying he had done something "very bad" and that he would not go to prison, and added that people would see him on the news.
He then went to his deceased father’s home in Lake Wales, entered a cabin on the property, and when police tried to remove him, gunfire was heard, revealing he had shot himself in the forehead and died instantly.
The sheriff said the teenage stepdaughter had pleaded: "Don’t shoot me! Don’t shoot me!" but was struck despite her pleas.
A note written by Crystal to Kenney was found, referencing his alcohol use and drug consumption, though police did not specify when it was written, whether immediately before the incident or earlier.
Investigations indicated that Kenney had previously mistreated his wife, though no complaints had been filed, and he had not been arrested previously for domestic violence.
