The police in South Korea arrested a man in his forties after he was accused of pouring boiling water on his Thai wife’s face while she was sleeping, in an attempt to disfigure her features and prevent her from leaving him or being involved with other men.

Local media, quoting the Uijeongbu Police Station in Gyeonggi Province, reported that the man was arrested on charges of aggravated assault.

Investigations revealed that the incident occurred on the afternoon of December 3 inside his apartment in the Hoowoon-dong neighborhood of the greater Seoul area, where he poured the boiling water on his wife’s face while she was asleep.

When the woman woke up in severe pain, he offered to take her to one of the hospitals in the Songdong-gu area.

Because she did not have enough money to receive treatment, she agreed to go with him.

After suspicion of assault, the hospital informed the police about the incident at 9 p.m.

According to a local newspaper, the man admitted during investigations that he wanted to "disfigure her so she would not look at other men."

He apologized to his wife and begged her to forgive him and continue the relationship, promising to take care of her, but she refused and confirmed that she would only communicate with him through the police or lawyers.

On the same day, the victim posted a message in a social media group dedicated to the Thai community in South Korea, requesting translators to assist her with legal procedures.

A translator quickly intervened to help her, and her post spread widely after showing a photo of the victim with her face fully wrapped in gauze, with only her eyes, nose, and mouth visible, which sparked waves of anger and sympathy.

Meanwhile, some social media users questioned the legal status of the victim’s residence, but the translator clarified that the woman holds an electronic travel authorization that allows her to stay legally in the country.

The translator, who mentioned in her personal profile that she studied the Korean language, confirmed her commitment to accompany the victim during treatment and legal procedures.

She also shared the medical bill, which showed that the treatment cost exceeded 7.3 million won (about 5,000 dollars), with 4 million won covered through donations.
