Taxi meter fares will be adjusted starting next Monday “The daytime starting fare will rise to 39 piasters” App-based transport services may increase by up to 20%

The decision to adjust taxi office and public transport fares has dominated discussions among social media users in Jordan, with many expressing dissatisfaction over the new increase, especially amid current economic conditions, considering it an additional burden on citizens facing growing living challenges.

In detail, the Head of the Taxi Offices and Public Transport Owners Syndicate, Mohammad Al-Hadid, said on Wednesday that taxi meter fares will be adjusted starting next Monday, with an increase ranging between one and two piasters. He explained that the daytime starting fare will rise to 39 piasters instead of 37, while the nighttime starting fare will reach 40 piasters instead of 38.

He added that the per-kilometer fare will also increase, with the daytime rate rising from 26 to 28 piasters and the nighttime rate from 32 to 33 piasters, noting that drivers have absorbed part of the rising fuel costs and that the new increase does not fully reflect the actual costs.

In a related context, the authority stated that the adjustment of taxi meter fares will be carried out in coordination with the relevant entities, taking into account the specific conditions of each governorate. Meanwhile, the land freight sector will continue to operate under a floating mechanism linked to fuel prices, allowing greater flexibility in dealing with changes without the need for frequent adjustments.

Increase in app-based transport services

For her part, the spokesperson for the Land Transport Regulatory Authority, Abla Al-Washah, explained that app-based transport services will see an increase that may reach up to 20% in light of the new adjustments.

The decision to adjust public transport fares includes an increase of about 5 piasters on approximately 75% of routes, and 10 piasters on about 25% of longer routes.

The authority confirmed that these adjustments aim to achieve a balance between operating costs and the continuity of service, while taking into account the direct impact on citizens.
