- The search took place in a remote desert during a cultural festival
A French citizen was discovered dead in northeastern Chad on Friday following a two-day search in a remote part of the Sahara Desert.
The Tourism Ministry identified the victim as Paul Ferreri, who went missing after leaving a tourist camp on Monday near the town of Bachikele.
Ferreri was visiting the region as part of the 6th International Festival of Saharan Cultures.
He and another unidentified tourist left the camp on Wednesday morning. The second tourist was later found and said he became disoriented while trying to return to the camp.
Chad’s Ennedi region, near the Sudanese border, is known for its remote mountains and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The festival, held in the town of Amdjarass, features performances from across the region to showcase traditional Saharan culture.
The French Foreign Ministry said it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local authorities. While the cause of death has not been determined, further details will be released as they become available.
