A British man has been found guilty of killing his wife eight years after being acquitted, following new evidence provided by their child.

Robert Rhodes had stabbed his wife Dawn in the neck but was acquitted in 2017 after claiming she had tried to attack him.

The new trial came after the child, during therapy sessions, revealed how they were forced to help in a plot to kill their mother and injure their father to make the incident appear as self-defense.

Rhodes was also found guilty of child cruelty, perverting the course of justice, and two counts of perjury; his sentencing will take place next year.

The court revealed how the father asked the child to approach the mother pretending he had drawn her a picture, then told her to close her eyes and hold out her hands, before her husband stabbed her in the kitchen on June 2, 2016.

Rhodes had discovered that she was having an affair with a work colleague.

Detective Kimball Edey stated: “Dawn was a victim of murder, and the child was manipulated and forced to do what they did. Rhodes showed extreme malice and manipulation.”

Double jeopardy laws allow for a retrial in exceptional circumstances when new and compelling evidence emerges.
