  • Worker sometimes slept in his winter coat to stay warm

  • Inquiry examines role of financial stress and migrant status in the death

A recent investigation into the death of a seasonal farmworker in Jersey revealed that the victim sometimes slept in his winter coat to keep warm.

George Michael Monte De Ramos Castrudes, 37, died last January after a fire he started to heat his cabin at La Valette nursery in Grouville got out of control.

A co-worker and former roommate, who was not living on-site at the time, told the inquest that Castrudes would sometimes unplug the electric heater due to concerns over high electricity bills.

The hearing at Morier House in St Helier is examining whether Castrudes’ financial difficulties and his status as a migrant contributed to his death.

It also emerged that his bank accounts were overdrawn because he was sending part of his wages to his family in the Philippines.

The inquest noted that a previous electrical report had identified the smoke alarm battery in the cabin needed replacement, which farm manager Paul Blake said he only became aware of after the incident.

The inquiry continues and is expected to conclude on Friday.
