WhatsApp has begun testing a new noise cancellation feature for voice and video calls, aiming to provide a clearer and more natural experience even in crowded or noisy environments.

The technology minimizes background noise such as traffic, wind, or café chatter while preserving the speaker’s voice. It operates in real time, allowing users to focus on the conversation without distractions.

The testing phase is currently limited to a small group of Android beta users following the 2.26.14.1 update available on the Google Play Store. Participating users can enable noise cancellation directly from the call menu, and it is typically activated by default at the start of any voice or video call.

The feature is particularly useful for calls made in noisy surroundings, such as busy cafés or outdoor locations like parks. Users who are not satisfied with its effect can easily turn it off at any time.

WhatsApp clarified that call audio quality depends on whether the other participant has the feature enabled. Noise cancellation improves the clarity of the speaker’s voice for the listener but does not affect the other participant’s voice if the option is not active on their device.

The platform plans to roll out the feature gradually, allowing more users in the coming weeks to activate noise cancellation during calls, enhancing overall voice and video call experiences.
