A young man of Arab nationality was killed in Mersin province, Turkey, after being struck in the head by a stray bullet while he was watching an anti-war march in his home country.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening in the city of Tarsus, southern Turkey, when protesters demonstrated against the renewed fighting in northeastern Syria.

The 24-year-old man was observing part of the protests when the bullet, fired from the garden of the opposite building, hit him and claimed his life immediately.

Turkish media reported that the young man had been living in Turkey for several years. He is a father to a daughter and works in agriculture.

An official statement from Mersin province said that the incident occurred after the protesters dispersed. A group of people went to a house garden, where they entered into a verbal altercation with the homeowner and his son. The statement added that the homeowner drew his pistol during the argument and fired a shot into the air, which struck the young man who was on the opposite balcony. The police arrested the father and his son, confiscated the weapon, and are investigating the incident.

More than 2.5 million refugees of various Arab nationalities live in Turkey, most of whom arrived after 2011, with a large number concentrated in the southern cities near the Syrian border.
