A man convicted of killing his former manager at a small Florida store in 1988 is scheduled to receive a lethal injection.

Richard Barry Randolph is set to be executed at Florida State Prison near Starke.

Randolph was found guilty of murder, armed robbery, sexual assault, and grand theft.

This will mark Florida’s 17th execution in 2025, setting a new state record for the most executions in a single year.

Court records show that Randolph attempted to break into the safe at the Handy-Way store in Palatka, where he had previously worked, in August 1988.

When manager Minnie Ruth McCollum noticed him, a struggle ensued.

Randolph then assaulted, strangled, and stabbed McCollum before leaving the store with her car, according to records.

Three women saw Randolph leaving and alerted authorities after noticing the chaos inside through the store window.

A deputy found McCollum still alive; she was taken to the hospital in a coma and died six days later from severe brain injuries, according to doctors.

Randolph was arrested shortly after the attack at a Jacksonville store while attempting to borrow money and cash lottery tickets stolen from the store. Investigators said he admitted to the attack and led them to bloody clothing he had discarded.

The Florida Supreme Court rejected Randolph’s appeal last week. He had argued that the lower court misused its authority by denying him access to public records and that his attorneys acted without his consent.

A final appeal is still pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.

So far, 43 men have been executed in the U.S. this year, with more than a dozen others scheduled for execution later in 2025 and into next year.
