A Syrian family’s trip turned into a tragic disaster on the international highway connecting Homs and Damascus after their car lost control and flipped multiple times, resulting in the death of all family members.
Syrian media reported that the victims were Dr. Nawaf Wadie Lyous, his wife Rouida Jaras Deeb, their daughter Zaka, and her husband Laqa Abdel Karim Al-Azou. The family was on their way to the village of Al-Zweitini in Wadi Al-Nasara, west of Homs, to pay respects to a relative before the journey ended in a heartbreaking tragedy.
This incident is part of a rising series of traffic accidents in Syria. According to Civil Defense data, more than 726 traffic accidents occurred during the first quarter of 2025, resulting in 46 deaths and 667 injuries across all age groups.
Deadly Roads
Statistics indicate that major and congested roads—such as the Homs–Damascus highway, Aleppo–Latakia road, and the Manbij area in eastern Aleppo countryside—experience the highest rates of accidents, highlighting the dangerous traffic conditions and deteriorating road infrastructure in the country.
According to the Civil Defense, teams responded to 1,504 traffic accidents nationwide by the end of July, leaving 85 fatalities and 1,398 injuries, reflecting the ongoing serious risks on public roads.
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety in Syria and the urgent need to improve traffic conditions and infrastructure to protect citizens from similar accidents.
