The management of Jordan’s Al-Wehdat Club has officially approved a retirement match for their former defender, Tareq Khattab (33), in recognition of his long career, outstanding contributions, and exemplary dedication to both the club and the national team.

This tribute comes after injuries forced the defensive star into early retirement, ending a career marked by achievements and challenges.

Al-Wehdat: Early Years and Golden Journey

Tareq Khattab began his football journey in Al-Wehdat’s youth teams, progressing through the ranks to the first team, where he became a central figure.

Egyptian coach Mohamed Omar was among the key mentors who recognized Khattab’s talent and helped him on the path to prominence.

During his tenure with Al-Wehdat, Khattab contributed to numerous domestic successes, including at least three Jordan Cup titles, a Jordan Super Cup, and multiple league championships as part of a golden generation.

Jordan National Team: Al-Nashama and Fighting Spirit

Khattab’s achievements extended beyond the club level as he represented Jordan (Al-Nashama) across various age groups up to the senior team, earning 46 international caps and scoring once.

A turning point in his international career came when Egyptian coach Hossam Hassan gave him the opportunity to play, notably in the World Cup 2014 qualification playoffs, proving his status as one of Jordan’s top defenders.

Throughout his career, Khattab was known for his defensive resilience and fighting spirit, earning widespread admiration—qualities sorely missed in Al-Wehdat’s defense after his retirement.

Professional Stints Abroad

The solid defender also had several professional experiences outside Jordan, including:

  • Al-Shabab (Saudi Arabia, 2014–2015)

  • Al-Masry (Egypt, 2015–2016)

  • Al-Salmiya (Kuwait, 2018–2019)

He later returned to Al-Wehdat before moving to Al-Ramtha in a final attempt to continue playing, though this stint was brief.

Injury: A Sad End to a Distinguished Career

Khattab struggled with repeated severe ACL injuries, which significantly affected his continuity. Despite his efforts to return, participating in some matches, the impact of his injuries remained evident.

Al-Wehdat Honors Its Promise

In a gesture of loyalty to the player who gave his all, Al-Wehdat approved a retirement match, expected to take place early next year, celebrating his football journey.

Khattab confirmed his intention to pursue coaching as his next step, while Al-Wehdat fans and the Jordanian football community continue to remember the formidable defender and hope the club will soon discover or attract a talent of similar caliber.
