Plastic gas cylinders spark controversy in Jordan Sale of cylinders exclusively through fuel depots and gas distribution agencies The new plastic gas cylinder is filled at a price of 7 dinars
Plastic gas cylinders in Jordan witnessed, over the past few hours, widespread controversy and significant engagement across social media platforms, quickly becoming a major topic among Jordanians amid a clear divergence of opinions between supporters and opponents of the idea. This came alongside the circulation of images and videos of the new cylinders, which gained wide attention across various platforms.
In detail, the head of the Owners of Fuel Stations and Gas Distribution Centers Union, Nahar Sa'idat, confirmed the official start of selling plastic gas cylinders through depots and gas agencies, exclusively in specific areas of the capital, Amman. These areas extend from Shafa Badran in the north to Naour in the south, and from the First Circle to western Wadi Al-Seer, as a first phase to evaluate the experiment and regulate the process of distribution and exchange.
Sa'idat explained that the new plastic cylinder is filled at a cost of 7 dinars, with a capacity of 12.5 kilograms of liquefied gas, while the filled cylinder is sold for the first time at a price of 60 dinars, including the valve and hose. He noted that the price is set by the investing company, not the union, while Jordanians have described the price as “high.”
He added that the quantities introduced into the market are still limited so far, with around 200,000 cylinders imported, aimed at regulating the exchange process and ensuring a gradual and smooth flow of use.
In the same context, he emphasized that there are no changes to traditional metal gas cylinders, confirming that they will continue to be sold and exchanged as usual without any restrictions, and that citizens have full freedom to choose between the two types.
He also stressed that the choice is entirely left to the consumer based on preference and purchasing power, explaining that the goal of introducing plastic cylinders is to provide lighter, more advanced alternatives while maintaining safety standards.
With the launch of the experiment, plastic gas cylinders have become a trending topic in Jordanian public discourse, amid widespread debate and differing opinions, while their images have spread notably across social media platforms, further intensifying the controversy and engagement surrounding them.
