Egyptian actress Shorouk has passed away after a prolonged illness that had kept her away from the spotlight for years. Despite not taking on leading roles, she left behind a rich artistic legacy filled with diverse performances that cemented her name in the hearts of audiences.

Her funeral prayer was held on Friday afternoon at Al-Sayyida Nafisa Mosque in Cairo, according to her grandson, after which her body was laid to rest in Imam Al-Laithi Cemetery in the Salah Salem area.

Her grandson called on the public to pray for her soul, noting that she was beloved by everyone and deeply cherished the love she received from people.

From Agriculture to Acting: A Unique Journey

Originally named “Alya,” the late actress studied at the Faculty of Agriculture before choosing to follow her artistic passion. In the 1980s, she changed her name to “Shorouk” and entered the world of acting—an artistic identity that would later become associated with her distinctive roles.

She began her career in small film roles before shifting her focus to television in the mid-1990s, where she found greater space to showcase her talent and left a lasting impression.

Memorable Roles and Milestones

Shorouk became known for her comedic and social roles, earning wide recognition in popular series such as “Yawmiyat Wanis” (Wanis’s Diaries), “Qadiyat Ra’y 'Am” (Public Opinion Case) alongside actress Yousra, and “Ragel W Sitt Settat” (A Man and Six Women), in which she brilliantly portrayed the character of “Um Mervat” with warmth and humor.

She also appeared in “Al-Hagg Metwally’s Family”, one of her most iconic works, as well as other roles portraying kind-hearted mothers or overbearing, even conniving, mothers-in-law—as seen in the film “Hobak Nar” (Your Love Is Fire).

Although she never played leading roles, she consistently left a mark with her performances, touching audiences with her sincerity, emotional depth, and ability to draw laughter and tears alike.

With Shorouk’s passing, the artistic community has lost a familiar and beloved face—an actress who brought warmth and authenticity to the screen. Her legacy remains a testament to a talent that left a quiet yet enduring imprint, even if it didn’t always take center stage.
