A ten-month-old girl became the youngest organ donor in the Indian state of Kerala after being declared brain-dead following a tragic road accident, giving her parents the humanitarian choice to offer a new chance at life to several patients.
Local reports stated that the girl’s parents agreed to donate her liver, kidneys, heart valve, and eyes at a hospital in Ernakulam city, benefiting four patients in the state. Among them, an infant received her liver, becoming the youngest recipient of a posthumous liver transplant in Kerala.
Her kidneys were transplanted into a ten-year-old child at a government hospital in the capital, Thiruvananthapuram, while her heart valves and corneas were sent to specialized medical centers for the completion of transplant procedures and treatment.
The state Health Minister praised the parents’ courage and their ability to make the decision to donate despite the pain of loss, emphasizing that their initiative will save lives and give hope to other families awaiting treatment.
The girl had sustained severe injuries in a collision in early February while she was with her mother and grandparents. She was moved between multiple hospitals for advanced care, but doctors declared her brain-dead after days of intensive treatment.
The donation and transfer of organs were coordinated through the relevant health authorities, with the police ensuring the ambulance transported the organs at top speed to their destinations within hours, paving the way for successful transplant surgeries and saving the patients’ lives.
