- Amazon to begin drone deliveries in Chicago's Southern suburbs
- Service will handle packages up to 5 pounds with pre-set drop-off points
Amazon is preparing to launch drone deliveries for select customers in Chicago’s southern suburbs this coming summer.
The company said its 83-pound Prime Air drones will operate from fulfillment centers to deliver packages within a 13 km radius.
Some residents have voiced concerns about the plan.
“I think this is a major problem,” said Vickie Battle.
Michael Morrow added: “Some people might think the world is coming to an end!”
Battle noted that drones could disrupt tree-lined streets and the peaceful atmosphere of the neighborhood.
Josh Brundage, Prime Air’s Senior Manager of Commercial Operations, said the Detroit winter trial offered important lessons for operating in northern climates.
He added that the drones are already active in eight U.S. cities, delivering packages up to five pounds in under two hours.
Prime members pay an extra $4.99 per order; non-members pay $9.99.
Pre-determined drop-off points will be set at homes or backyards for secure deliveries. Brundage said many customers prefer backyard deliveries for better protection.
Some incidents have occurred, including a drone crash into a Texas apartment building that caused smoke and required a fire response.
Amazon emphasized safety as a top priority, and the drones are FAA-certified, though some residents remain cautious.
Each fulfillment center will have 10–15 drones, with each drone completing one delivery per flight during daylight hours. Amazon plans a community meeting next month.
