WhatsApp Web is preparing a major update allowing users to make group voice and video calls directly through the browser, as part of the company’s efforts to reduce reliance on the mobile app or desktop version.
According to a recent report, the WhatsApp team, owned by Meta, is working to enable this feature alongside call links and scheduling, allowing users to create invitations to join calls even if they are not actively participating in the chat at the time.
The move is expected to make WhatsApp Web easier to use during working hours or when devices are shared, while maintaining continuous communication across platforms.
The report clarified that WhatsApp is focusing on ensuring call stability on browsers, while the initial version may support fewer participants compared to the mobile app, which allows up to 32 users; the web version is expected to support between 8 and 16 participants.
It also indicated that WhatsApp is working on a call scheduling feature, enabling individuals or groups to set up calls in advance with a title, description, and scheduled time.
WhatsApp has not yet provided official information on the rollout date of these features, but they reflect a broader push to make WhatsApp Web an independent and fully-featured platform, rather than just an extension of the mobile app.
