  • Pilot and co-pilot killed, others injured in collision on LaGuardia runway
  • Over 70 passengers and the flight crew were on board the Montreal-bound plane

The pilot and co-pilot were killed, and several others were injured when a Canadian passenger plane collided with a fire truck on a LaGuardia Airport runway in New York on Sunday evening, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said the plane struck a vehicle belonging to the authority, which was responding to a separate incident around 11:40 p.m. local time.

The Port Authority described the vehicle as an aircraft rescue and firefighting truck, operated by police officers at the time of the incident, according to the same sources.

The aircraft was carrying between 70-100 passengers and four crew members. It was approaching the end of the runway at a speed of roughly 48 kilometers per hour when the collision occurred.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the plane had departed from Montreal and that the accident occurred on Runway 4 at LaGuardia Airport. An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident.

A video shared on social media shows the passenger plane on the runway, with the cockpit area visibly damaged at the lower front section of the fuselage.

The airport was temporarily closed, and all flights were halted on the ground due to the emergency situation, according to the FAA.

The National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a team to investigate the cause of the accident.

LaGuardia Airport is located in the Queens borough of New York City.
