- British surgeon causes physical harm to children in botched operations
- Independent review documents serious injuries affecting 85–100 kids
British surgeon Yasser Jabbar, 43, caused children to suffer chronic pain, deformities, permanent nerve damage, and one case of amputation. Others were left with leg length discrepancies of up to 20 cm following surgeries in UK hospitals.
Independent experts reviewed the care of 721 patients under Jabbar at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, later adding 68 more cases for a total of 789.
Full findings are expected to be presented to the hospital board on January 29.
The hospital confirmed the surgeon harmed between 85 and 100 children: 32 suffered severe injuries, 36 moderate, and 18 mild.
Families had previously questioned the accuracy of reports on their children’s care, accusing the hospital of a “cover-up.”
The hospital was criticized for failing to protect children, with some noting that independent surgeon reviews left unanswered questions.
Jabbar left the hospital in 2023 after a report revealed some procedures were “inappropriate” or “incorrect” and described his behavior toward staff as unacceptable and threatening.
He lost his UK medical license in January 2024 but later moved abroad to continue working.
The hospital expressed deep regret to affected children and families, confirming that each child’s care has been reviewed and the report will be shared with families before public release.
