In support of Palestine: Wide reaction to the cancellation of Hélène Ségara’s concert at the Carthage Festival

The decision by the Carthage International Festival to cancel the concert of French singer Hélène Ségara witnessed widespread interaction and great praise from the public and activists, who considered this decision a clear and explicit stance in support of the Palestinian cause and a rejection of all forms of normalization.
On Wednesday, the festival’s administration announced the cancellation of the concert, which was scheduled to take place on July 31 as part of the 59th edition of the festival. This came after a wave of criticism on social media due to Ségara’s support for Tel Aviv through her previous participation in fundraising events for “Jewish organizations” that support it.
“Tunisia supports the Palestinian cause”
In an official statement, the festival’s administration confirmed the decision to withdraw Hélène Ségara’s performance, emphasizing its full commitment to Tunisia’s steadfast position in supporting the Palestinian cause and standing alongside the Palestinian people in reclaiming their legitimate rights, foremost among them the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
The program of this edition of the Carthage Festival, held between July 19 and August 21, includes several artistic performances that “celebrate the steadfastness of the Palestinians and support their just cause,” according to the same statement.
Wave of support on social media
The cancellation decision received significant interaction across social media platforms, where many Tunisians and Arabs expressed their relief and appreciation for the stance, noting that the step reflects a collective awareness rejecting art detached from values and placing humanitarian principles as a priority. Some described the decision as a “strong message” affirming that Tunisia, both as a people and through its institutions, rejects normalization and continues its unwavering support for Palestine.
It is worth mentioning that Tunisia is known for its historic role in supporting the Palestinian cause, having hosted the Palestine Liberation Organization led by Yasser Arafat between 1982 and 1994. Tunisian President Kais Saied continues to affirm his supportive stance towards the liberation of Palestine and rejection of all forms of occupation, stressing on multiple occasions that “Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the State of Palestine.”
