Sweifieh, one of Amman"s most upscale neighborhoods, known for its upscale shopping malls and luxurious cafes, has recently become the focus of public attention. This is not due to an entertainment event, the opening of a new store, or the presence of international and local brands, but rather to a disturbing phenomenon: the increasing presence of rats in its streets and alleys.
The "From Here We Start" program received complaints about the spread of this phenomenon, which has sparked discontent among residents and visitors alike, particularly visitors who are welcoming millions of tourists and Jordanian expatriates this summer. Questions have been raised about the causes and measures taken to mitigate this problem.
According to local residents, daily sightings of rats have become common, even in the most vibrant areas, prompting some to express concerns about potential health and environmental repercussions.
Some residents attribute this spread to the accumulation of waste and weak oversight of sanitation operations in some back streets, in addition to the absence of regular maintenance campaigns for sewage networks, which are believed to be a haven and passage for rats, and the impact of some construction projects in the area.
