In a highly unconventional scene, a couple chose to begin their married life in a way that reflects their shared passion, tying the knot beneath the ocean off the coast of Mauritius.

The bride and groom, Sibylle Blumenthal and Rob Buurveld, both 55, exchanged vows on April 6 during a diving ceremony held in Cap Malheureux in the north of the island. They explained the idea came after 12 years of diving together, which made the sea feel like “the place closest to their hearts.”

The pair met through a mutual friend, with their relationship gradually developing through diving trips, eventually leading them to relocate three years ago from Europe to Bali to dedicate more time to their shared passion.

Before entering the ceremony site, they completed the legal formalities and exchanged vows aboard a boat, then descended to the seabed where a simple setting had been prepared, decorated with palm-leaf arches, white flowers, celebratory drinks, and tropical plants.

Breaking with tradition, the couple did not wear full diving suits, instead remaining in formal attire. The bride appeared in a modified wedding gown fitted with small weights to keep her steady underwater, walking barefoot toward the groom while holding a bouquet of plumeria flowers.

During the ceremony, they exchanged additional vows written on waterproof sheets before confirming their consent using the familiar diving “OK” signal. Rings placed inside a seashell were then exchanged, followed by their first dance underwater.

Among the most striking details, the couple shared a single air supply from one diving tank, a gesture the bride described as “deeply symbolic.”

After the ceremony, they informed family and friends, who reacted positively, saying the choice perfectly reflected their personalities and shared passion.
