A worker has died in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after sustaining serious injuries while taking part in the installation of stage structures for an upcoming concert by global star Shakira, according to event organizers.

The organizers said in a statement posted on social media that a “tragic accident occurred on Sunday afternoon during the assembly of the show’s stage structures, resulting in the death of one of the technicians working at the site.”

Local fire services reported that the worker suffered severe injuries to the lower limbs in an incident involving a lifting system at the construction site. He was transported to hospital after the accident but later died from his injuries.

Preliminary information indicates the deceased worker was a local resident and not part of Shakira’s official touring team, which is expected to arrive in Rio at a later stage for final preparations.

The stage area was partially closed off and cordoned with warning barriers following the incident, while preparations continue for the “Todo Mundo No Rio” concert scheduled for May 2 on Copacabana Beach, an event that typically attracts massive crowds.

Rio’s city authorities had previously confirmed Shakira as the headlining artist, with the singer describing the event as “the concert of my dreams” and expressing excitement to meet fans.

In recent days, Shakira has also posted messages on social media saying she is preparing surprises for the show, including guest appearances, new songs, and different stage looks.
