Surveillance cameras captured a dramatic moment in Omaha, Nebraska, when a sinkhole opened up at a crowded intersection in the south-central part of the city, engulfing two vehicles that were stopped at a traffic light.
The incident occurred in a bustling midtown area, as an SUV and a pickup truck fell into a deep hole after the pavement beneath them suddenly gave way, police said, noting that neither driver was injured.
The pickup driver managed to climb out of the hole on his own, then joined bystanders to help the SUV driver get out, according to police statements.
Officer Sarah Martier, a spokesperson for the Omaha Police, said: “We are grateful for their quick response and immediate assistance.”
The area is located near the University of Nebraska at Omaha and serves as a lively entertainment hub with restaurants, shops, and a cinema, making it a popular destination for residents and visitors alike.
Omaha Public Works clarified on its official website that the sinkhole resulted from a broken main water line.
