  • Tens of thousands lose power as winter storm hits Massachusetts
  • Strong winds and heavy snowfall threaten infrastructure

A winter storm left tens of thousands of homes and businesses without electricity in Massachusetts on Monday.

The state’s Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) reported that more than 80,000 customers were still without power as of 6:30 a.m.

The hardest-hit cities included Hamilton, Essex, Winhum, and Scituate.

Wind gusts posed one of the biggest challenges, reaching 88–113 kilometers per hour (km/h) or higher in southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and the islands, while inland areas saw gusts of 64–88 km/h.

The heavy, wet snow is expected to bring down trees and cut power lines across the state.
