Avichay Adraee sparks controversy with his comment on Huda Shaarawi's death Avichay Adraee: Huda Shaarawi’s passing is a great loss for the Arab audience
In a post described by many as unusual, Avichay Adraee, the military spokesperson for the occupation army, commented on the death of the late Syrian actress Huda Shaarawi, who was killed by her maid inside her home in Damascus on Thursday.
Adraee sparked widespread controversy when he shared a photo of the late actress, commenting: “This year’s Bab Al-Hara series during Ramadan in the Arab world will not be as we are used to.”
He noted that the passing of Huda Shaarawi represents a significant loss for the Arab audience, who lost a symbol of authenticity and art that accompanied viewers for many years.
Adraee added: “We believe in the importance of culture in the Arab world; it is the bridge connecting the past to the present, and the common language that transcends all barriers.”
He continued: “Art is not just a performance; it is soft power that shapes the Arab identity and unites hearts around the values of chivalry and generosity embodied in the works of the late actress.”
He concluded: “Preserving this artistic heritage is an essential part of respecting the region’s civilizational history. True art does not die; it remains a beacon illuminating the collective memory of peoples.”
Many reacted negatively to Avichay Adraee’s post, considering it an “illogical interference,” and argued that it is better not to address topics outside his jurisdiction.
