  • Zuckerberg announces “Incognito Chat” for AI conversations that do not retain data
  • Meta bets on private artificial intelligence inside WhatsApp

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced a new step focused on user privacy in artificial intelligence tools, revealing a new feature called “Incognito Chat” within Meta AI. The mode is designed to prevent the system from retaining or accessing conversation content at any time.

The feature is based on “Private Processing” technology introduced by WhatsApp last year, a security architecture that enables AI features to run without exposing message content to Meta, WhatsApp, or any third party.

Private Processing operates through a secure cloud environment that processes data in a confidential manner. Messages are hidden during transmission and processing, and once the task is completed, the data is immediately deleted without being stored or retained.

This technology is already used in several WhatsApp features, including tools for improving message writing and summarizing chats, ensuring tasks are performed without exposing users’ personal content.

According to Zuckerberg, “Incognito Chat” works in a manner similar to end-to-end encryption, where messages disappear once the conversation is closed. The system does not keep any logs or stored copies of chats.

He noted that while some AI platforms offer incognito-like modes, they may still process user inputs and outputs. In contrast, Meta AI’s “Incognito Chat” is designed from the ground up not to retain conversation history.

The feature relies on secure and encrypted execution environments that process data in complete isolation, preventing even Meta itself from accessing conversation content. This approach is intended to strengthen trust in using AI for sensitive and personal conversations.

Meta said the system has undergone independent security audits conducted by specialized firms, which confirmed that the architecture meets strict standards for privacy and digital security.

The rollout of the feature has begun gradually for WhatsApp users and will reach all accounts over time, depending on region and account type.
