- A striking red-carpet look steals the spotlight at the AMVCA
- Social media split between praise and criticism
The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) in Nigeria turned into a vibrant showcase of fashion and spectacle, in a night widely described as one of the most glamorous and cinematic events in Africa.
Held in Lagos, the 12th edition of the ceremony brought together film and television stars, alongside digital creators, all competing with bold and theatrical fashion statements featuring elaborate designs, shimmering fabrics, and oversized gowns with dramatic trains.
Beyond its role in honouring achievements in film, TV, and digital storytelling, the event has grown into one of the continent’s key cultural highlights, where celebrity style draws almost as much attention as the awards themselves.
Reality TV star Queen Mercy Atang captured attention with a highly unusual appearance, claiming her outfit was made from more than 500 loaves of bread.
She arrived on the red carpet surrounded by assistants carrying bread trays, with the large outfit limiting her movement due to its size and structure.
Atang said the look was not meant purely to shock, but to promote her baking business, adding that the AMVCA provided the perfect platform to showcase her work.
Fashion designer Toyin Lawani also said on Instagram that the look was part of a growing trend encouraging people to “wear their business.”
The outfit quickly went viral, sparking widespread debate online—where some praised its creativity, while others criticised it as wasteful.
