- WhatsApp works on clearer calls and noise reduction
- Feature still in development
WhatsApp is working on developing a new feature aimed at improving the quality of voice and video calls by reducing background noise, following the launch of web-based calling, which offers end-to-end encryption.
According to the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.11.8, the company is working on built-in noise cancellation for calls, which can isolate the user’s voice and minimize surrounding sounds such as traffic, wind, or nearby conversations, ensuring clearer communication even in noisy environments.
Previously, noise cancellation was available on iPhone and iPad via system audio settings, with some microphones offering voice isolation during calls.
On Android, calls were processed without built-in noise reduction, making background sounds more noticeable.
The feature will automatically activate at the start of any Android call, accompanied by a notification confirming its activation. Calls will remain fully end-to-end encrypted, with audio processed locally on the device before encryption and transmission.
Users will also have control over the feature and can disable it when necessary, such as while sharing music or capturing important ambient sounds during live calls or events.
The feature is still under development and testing. WhatsApp plans to release it in a future update after refining the app’s ability to detect and filter unwanted sounds, initially offering it to a group of beta testers before making it available to all users.
