- Woman develops sepsis after dog saliva touches minor wound
- Undergoes quadruple limb amputation to save her life
A tragic medical case unfolded in Birmingham, UK, as 56-year-old Manjit Sanga underwent amputation of all four limbs after developing sepsis, which doctors linked to her dog’s saliva contacting a small cut or scratch.
The crisis began in the evening of July 2025, when Manjit returned home from work feeling severely unwell. The next day, her husband, Kam Sanga, 60, found her unconscious on the sofa, with blue lips and extremities cold to the touch.
He immediately called emergency services, and she was admitted to intensive care in a medically induced coma. During treatment, she suffered multiple cardiac arrests, leaving doctors uncertain about her chances of survival.
Doctors confirmed Manjit, formerly a pharmacist, developed sepsis—a dangerous overreaction to infection that can lead to toxic shock, dangerously low blood pressure, and damage to lungs, kidneys, liver, and other organs, potentially fatal in severe cases.
She later suffered rare, life-threatening complications called disseminated intravascular coagulation, causing abnormal blood clots throughout her body.
Her family said her survival odds were slim, and if she lived, multiple amputations would be necessary.
As her condition worsened, surgeons amputated her legs below the knees and her hands, also removing her spleen due to lung infection and gallstones, in an effort to save her life.
After 32 weeks of intensive treatment, Manjit’s condition significantly improved, and she was able to return home.
