Police in Lucknow arrested four individuals accused of murdering a minor girl after luring her into a relationship on social media with a promise of marriage, local authorities in India reported.

Her body was found on railway tracks five days ago.

Investigations identified the suspects as Anshu Gautam and his accomplices, Ashiq, Vaibhav, and Rishabh.

The victim’s mother told police that Anshu befriended her daughter on Instagram and communicated with her through phone and social media before enticing her with a marriage promise.

When the girl did not return home, the family contacted Anshu’s relatives but received no assistance.

Following a complaint filed by the family, police opened an official investigation.

Given the severity of the crime, a team led by Inspector Suresh Singh was formed and arrested the four accused within hours.

During questioning, Anshu admitted that he and his accomplices strangled the girl after a dispute and dumped her body on the railway tracks.

Police said strict legal measures are being taken against the suspects, and a strong charge sheet linking all evidence will be submitted to ensure the harshest punishments are imposed, according to an official.
