A 12-year-old British boy saved his mother from a serious accident after she fainted while driving on a Christmas trip.
Nicola Crump, from Ebbw Vale, Blaenau Gwent, was driving on a road with her son Zac when she suddenly felt unwell and lost consciousness behind the wheel.
In a critical moment, Zac, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, took control of the steering wheel and successfully guided the car to the central reservation.
Nicola said she only remembers waking up on the other side of the road without knowing what happened.
She explained that she was on her way to the Birmingham Christmas market, after her son decided to join her at the last minute because her friend had to cancel due to illness.
She added in a local radio interview that she felt extreme heat, stopped in a "dangerous" spot without a hard shoulder, and then completely lost consciousness.
As she lost control, her foot pressed the accelerator, bringing the car's speed up to about 97 km/h.
Zac said he tried to wake his mother but quickly realized he couldn’t, so he acted immediately.
Using the grassy verge to slow the car, he safely brought it to a stop, switched off the engine, and called emergency services.
"I was really scared, but I knew I had to do something," he said, noting he confirmed his mother was breathing while speaking to the emergency operators.
Nicola confirmed that her son kept reassuring her: "Don't worry, Mum, everything is fine," which helped her stay calm after regaining consciousness.
Police and paramedics arrived shortly after, checked Nicola on the spot, and later found she had very low blood pressure.
Neither mother nor son was injured, and although the car was damaged, it was not considered a total loss.
Nicola said fainting is rare for her and she will undergo further tests before driving again.
She revealed that police officers were impressed by Zac's calmness after hearing the emergency call and invited him to their Worcester headquarters to award him a certificate of appreciation.
Nicola described him as her "little hero," emphasizing that his calm and quick action saved their Christmas trip from ending in a bigger disaster.
