A Chinese man sparked widespread debate on social media after marrying just four hours following a blind date arranged by multiple matchmakers, later depleting his entire savings of over 240,000 yuan (around US$34,000) within a month of marriage.

Huang Zhongcheng attended the blind date on the morning of August 21, introduced by nine different matchmakers to the same woman, who works at a beauty salon.

“On the way to the date, eight matchmakers suddenly appeared. Including the one from my village, there were nine in total recommending the same woman,” Huang told local media.

The couple met in person and registered their marriage just four hours later.

Huang added: “She insisted that we finalise everything the same day. Around 5 p.m., we went to register the marriage. Everything happened so fast. I felt dizzy all day and even told her, ‘Today feels like a dream.’”

He mentioned that his wife asked him to move to Guangdong province to earn money and repeatedly requested financial assistance under various pretexts.

Within just one month of their wedding, his full savings of 240,000 yuan were exhausted.

“Usually she wouldn’t reply to my messages, but whenever she did, it was always about money. For example, she asked for funds for the Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine’s Day). On September 6, she claimed her daughter needed a computer,” Huang revealed.

Chat records showed Huang sent her a red envelope containing 1,314 yuan, a number symbolizing “forever” in Chinese culture, to which she replied, “Thanks, hubby.”

He later transferred an additional 2,300 yuan (around US$320) to buy the computer for her daughter.

The incident shocked many and sparked heated discussions on Chinese social media, with one user commenting: “I admire those who dare to marry impulsively. They are extremely bold. They might not even know where the other person lives, yet they register the marriage and hand over money. Full respect!”
