Deep in the desert northwest of Aqaba, the village of Abbasiya lives outside of modern life. It has been inhabited by approximately 200 families for more than a century and lacks basic services, including electricity, water, roads, and a health center.
Residents navigate a primitive, unpaved road more than 18 kilometers from the international highway.
Abbasiya residents rely on solar panels to power their electricity for a few hours during summers when temperatures exceed 43 degrees Celsius, and they bring firewood for heating in the winter.
Water is supplied to the village only by tankers. About 30 years ago, residents were forced to build simple classrooms to educate their children at their own expense, given the lack of government schools and health centers.
