In this section of the From Here We Start programme, the town of Buwayda al-Hawamda in Mafraq Governorate suffers from the problem of abandoned quarries and crushers, an estimated 4 quarries that were abandoned by their owners several years ago, which led to them turning into waste dumps and a dangerous source for the environment and public health of the residents nearby.
Despite repeated appeals from the townspeople to intervene immediately and take measures to protect them and their children from falling into these high quarries, which lack the minimum requirements for public safety amid the absence of official oversight over them, according to what citizens put it.
Citizens demanded the necessity of erecting a fence over the quarries to avoid any disasters affecting their children and visitors to the area, noting the death of a person and his wife last year as a result of their falling into one of the quarries.
