WhatsApp has officially begun the gradual deactivation of the “avatar” feature on Android and iOS, in a move that will end users’ ability to create, edit, and use digital avatars within the app, while retaining only previously saved stickers.
The feature, originally introduced in beta updates, allowed users to design a digital version of themselves by customizing facial features, hairstyles, and outfits, as well as adding backgrounds and animated effects. It also appeared alongside the profile picture in the account info section, with an interactive toggle between the two.
Over the past few years, Meta has worked on improving the feature by refining its design and expanding customization options, including the introduction of avatar sticker creation for use in chats. However, user engagement remained relatively low compared to the company’s expectations.
According to recent updates, WhatsApp has started removing avatar tools from settings, chat screens, and the keyboard, preventing direct access or sharing within conversations. At the same time, previously sent avatar stickers will remain available in the “recent stickers” or “favorites” sections for some users.
The rollout is happening gradually, with an increasing number of users losing access to avatar editing tools and receiving in-app notices indicating the feature’s upcoming removal. In some cases, the avatar section has already been completely removed from settings, signaling its near-total disappearance.
Although WhatsApp has not provided an official explanation, the decision is widely believed to be linked to low usage levels, prompting the company to shift focus toward more widely adopted features.
The removal process is expected to continue over the coming weeks without a fixed end date, until the feature is fully eliminated from the app, leaving users unable to create or manage avatars altogether.
