Separate customization for each chat with a phased rollout under testing
WhatsApp is developing a new feature that allows users to customize the appearance of conversations on its web version using “chat themes,” in a move aimed at improving user experience and giving chats a more personal feel.
The upcoming feature will let users change how conversations look by selecting different colors and backgrounds, making the interface more varied and easier to distinguish between multiple chats at once.
According to available information, WhatsApp plans to extend this feature—already partially available on mobile apps—to the web version, where customization options were previously limited and mostly restricted to background changes with basic visual elements.
“Chat themes” will rely on pre-set visual designs that adjust message bubble colors and background styling in a coordinated way, creating a more visually consistent and polished experience.
The platform will also introduce a deeper level of personalization, allowing users to assign different themes to individual chats. This means conversations can be visually separated based on context, such as using simple tones for work chats and more vibrant styles for personal conversations.
Leaks suggest the feature will include a wide range of options—around 49 themes in total—offering multiple variations of similar colors, including different shades of blue ranging from calm tones to brighter, more vivid styles.
Sources confirm that these themes will remain private to the user and will not be visible to other participants in the conversation, ensuring personalization is strictly individual and does not affect how chats appear on the other side.
This development is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to expand customization tools and enhance user experience across platforms. The feature is expected to roll out gradually after testing is completed, starting with beta users before a wider release.
