Trump continues major changes in traditional White House gardens
The White House gardens underwent extensive changes months after President Donald Trump removed the famous lawn and replaced it with concrete pavers.
Recently, White House teams placed small rectangular strips of artificial grass on the patio to decorate the 2026 “Easter Egg Roll” event.
These strips were laid beneath rows of white benches while children and their parents participated in storytime, part of the annual celebrations usually held in the garden.
The Rose Garden, originally designed during President John F. Kennedy’s administration and his wife Jackie in 1961, is one of the most symbolic areas of the White House. It was intended as a green space suitable for hosting official ceremonies on its central lawn.
Changes continued during Trump’s first term, when First Lady Melania Trump made the controversial decision to reduce the lawn area and remove the Kennedy-planted crabapple trees.
Upon Trump’s return for a second term, the lawn was completely removed and replaced with concrete pavers, along with patio furniture partially inspired by Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.
The 79-year-old president explained in an interview last month that the decision was made to facilitate press events on the lawn, noting the difficulty of walking on wet ground, especially for women wearing high heels.
He also added that the golden letters above the roses clearly display the garden’s name.
The White House confirmed that renovation work is ongoing, with plans to replace the floor of the covered walkway next to the Rose Garden with black granite slabs.
Similarly, the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden on the east side of the White House underwent changes after it was completely removed in October 2025 to make way for a new 90,000-square-foot ballroom.
The Jacqueline Kennedy Garden had been dedicated to Jackie Kennedy 60 years ago by former First Lady Claudia Johnson and was considered a symbol of the couple’s history and significance to Kennedy family enthusiasts.
