  • Woman faces manslaughter charge after death of diabetic daughter
  • Investigations reveal ignored warning signs

Authorities in the United States arrested a 42-year-old mother from Kirkland, Washington, on suspicion of manslaughter after allegedly allowing her 10-year-old daughter, who had Type 1 diabetes, to die gradually during a family road trip while the child lay in a coma on the backseat next to her siblings.

Investigators reported that the mother, Lloydina McAllister, was aware of warning signs of her daughter’s deteriorating condition since mid-July, but instead of seeking medical help or taking her to a hospital, she went on a road trip from Washington to Northern California with her boyfriend and three other children.

During the trip, the family passed 31 hospitals without stopping, while the girl’s condition worsened. She arrived at the hospital on July 18, already deceased for several hours, sitting next to her 12-year-old sister and one-year-old brother.

Investigations showed that the child died from prolonged diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body lacks sufficient insulin.

It was also revealed that the girl’s condition had been poorly managed since her diagnosis in 2018, with previous incidents reported four times to the state Department of Children, Youth, and Families.

McAllister later told police that she did not seek medical help because she was not allowed to take her daughter out of state without the father’s permission, and that the girl was responsible for packing her medical supplies, which had been left at home during the trip.

Phone records further showed that she searched online for ways to quickly lower blood sugar before her daughter’s death, then for “sudden death from diabetes” and about hiring a lawyer.

Kirkland Police Chief Mike St. Jean said, “This was a complex and emotionally challenging investigation. The collaboration between our detectives, medical professionals, and prosecutors was essential to clarify what happened. We remain committed to protecting the most vulnerable members of our community, especially children who cannot advocate for themselves.”
