Important for WhatsApp Users

The WABetaInfo blog reported that WhatsApp plans to launch a username feature soon, noting that the username reservation function is currently being tested in the app’s beta version, according to the German news agency.
The blog, which specializes in tracking WhatsApp updates, explained that users should start thinking in advance about their preferred username and consider alternatives in case they cannot reserve their desired name.
Username Rules
The following rules apply to future usernames:
- Usernames are limited to lowercase letters, numbers, dots, and underscores.
- Each username must contain at least one lowercase letter.
- Names starting with "www.." are not allowed.
Security and Data Protection
WhatsApp clarified that the username feature aims to enhance security and protect user data, as knowing a phone number alone is no longer sufficient to contact someone without their consent. The option to call outside the app has been removed, and users cannot share their phone numbers with others.
The blog also noted that all future usernames can optionally be secured with a Personal Identification Number (PIN), meaning that knowing a username alone is not enough to communicate; the correct PIN must be entered first.
Comparison with Other Apps
It is worth mentioning that the competitor app Signal introduced a username feature at the beginning of 2024, allowing users to change or delete their username at any time, providing a safe alternative for communication without sharing personal phone numbers.
