American University: “Honorary doctorates are awarded according to strict standards” American University warns of legal action if its name is used in a “misleading” manner

The British University in Egypt has firmly denied recent claims that it granted honorary doctorates to certain artists or public figures, stressing that such reports are entirely false and constitute a deliberate attempt to mislead public opinion by unlawfully using the university’s name.

The controversy spread widely on social media after rumors circulated that actor Ahmed Falawkas had been honored with an honorary doctorate during a ceremony allegedly held on the Alexandria Corniche — claims the university completely refuted.

“We have nothing to do with such titles”

In an official statement, the university affirmed that it is the only entity legally authorized to award academic and scientific degrees. Any certificates or honorary titles issued outside its official channels, it clarified, are invalid and unrecognized.

Strict criteria for honorary doctorates

The university stressed that the granting of honorary doctorates is subject to a specialized academic committee and rigorous international standards, noting that it has only awarded such honors to a select group of world-renowned figures, including: Sir Magdi Yacoub, Professor Farouk El-Baz, Professor David Phoenix, Professor George Lethim, and Professor George Abi Saab.

University warns of legal action

The statement further emphasized that the university reserves the full legal right to take action against any individual or entity misusing its name or spreading false information, describing such behavior as a pursuit of fame or self-promotion.

The university concluded by urging media outlets and social media users to verify information carefully, avoid spreading unverified rumors, and rely solely on its official statements as a trustworthy source.
