A woman in Ethiopia’s eastern Harari region has given birth to five babies (four boys and one girl) in a rare delivery after 12 years of trying to conceive.
Bedriya Adem, 35, said she and her husband were overjoyed, describing the birth as a “divine blessing” that brought five children at once.
The director of Harari Hospital, Dr. Mohammed Nur Abdullah, said the mother and babies are receiving medical care, confirming their condition is stable, with birth weights ranging between 1.3 and 1.4 kilograms.
He explained that the pregnancy occurred naturally without fertility treatment, a very rare case, with odds estimated at about one in 55 million for natural quintuplet pregnancies.
The doctor added that delivery was performed via caesarean section to ensure safety, noting the mother had been under continuous medical supervision and was informed early that she was carrying multiple fetuses.
The mother said she was surprised to discover a fifth baby after expecting four, adding: “I prayed for one child, and God granted me five.”
She also spoke about years of psychological and social pressure due to delayed childbirth, saying her village often questioned her situation before it turned into overwhelming joy.
The mother, who works in subsistence farming, said she is now concerned about supporting her new family, while expressing confidence that help will come through her community and the state.
