- Re-identifying the suspect in a case dating back to the 1980s
- Modern DNA techniques lead to formal charges after decades of investigation
More than 40 years after the body of a 16-year-old high school student was found brutally murdered in Texas, authorities have announced formal charges against a man suspected of involvement in a case that remained unsolved for decades.
During a press conference, Montgomery County Sheriff Wesley Doolittle announced the arrest of Bobby Charles Taylor Sr., following suspicions of his involvement in the killing of Diana Ough, who was 16 years old at the time and a student at New Caney High School.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the girl disappeared on the evening of September 27, 1986, while walking from her home in the Porter area toward a small store along FM 1314 near Sorters Road.
After her disappearance, she was later found in a heavily wooded area near Old Houston Road in the city of Conroe, approximately 11 kilometers from her last known location. She had suffered severe assault and fatal stab wounds.
Initially, a man was convicted in the case the following month, but he was later exonerated after DNA testing proved he was not involved, prompting the case to be reopened for many years.
In 2024, investigators were able to identify Taylor, now 60 years old, as a primary suspect after using advanced DNA analysis techniques and genetic genealogy research.
The county sheriff said during the press conference that “the level of confidence in the genetic match is one in astronomical numbers,” adding that the evidence “strongly indicates he is responsible for the crime.”
According to investigators, Taylor was wanted in another criminal case and is believed to have been hiding in Mexico at the time he was identified as a suspect in the Ough case, before surrendering himself to a federal investigative office in Mexico City on April 24, 2026.
After being extradited to the United States, he was formally charged on May 4 with first-degree murder with premeditation and was held in Montgomery County Jail pending trial.
If convicted, he could face the death penalty, according to the county district attorney.
For her part, the victim’s mother, now 82 years old, expressed her long-standing pain in a statement read by investigators, recalling her daughter’s love for fashion and family, and saying the family is only now beginning to experience true closure. She also thanked authorities for “their dedication to uncovering the truth and bringing a sense of closure.”
The county sheriff urged potential witnesses to come forward with any information, emphasizing that the investigation remains ongoing to determine whether there may be additional victims linked to the suspect, especially since he lived only about 3 kilometers from the crime scene at the time.
Authorities said this development marks a “critical milestone” in a cold case that has lasted nearly four decades, though it has not yet been fully closed, with investigations continuing into any further leads that could reveal additional details about possible related crimes.
