A robot disrupted the schedule of a U.S. airline flight traveling from Oakland to San Diego, delaying it by more than an hour after unusual inspection procedures were carried out on the runway.

The robot, named “Bebop” and weighing around 32 kilograms, was en route for a work assignment when it became the focus of security screening and safety questions ahead of departure, particularly regarding its battery.

Before boarding, the robot even performed a brief demonstration for passengers, but concerns later emerged once it was placed inside the cabin.

According to its operator, questions began over the type of battery used and whether it met safety standards, before a direct inspection was requested.

In a later statement, the airline said the robot’s lithium battery exceeded the permitted capacity, leading to its confiscation and the resulting flight delay.

The company behind the robot said it is currently working to recover the battery ahead of its next scheduled appearance.

After procedures were completed, the flight eventually departed late, leaving behind an unusual travel story.
