- Earthquake strikes central Philippines
- Aftershocks felt across wide areas with no reported injuries
A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Samar Island in central Philippines on Monday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
The quake occurred at a depth of around 10 kilometres, about 9 kilometres from the coastal town of San Julian in Samar province, triggering widespread shaking across several areas.
A local police officer described the tremor as “strong and sudden,” adding that no injuries have been reported so far, despite minor damage inside the police station, where parts of the roof structure collapsed and furniture was displaced, forcing officers to move outside due to fear of aftershocks.
Authorities reported intensity V shaking in several areas, including Can-Avid in eastern Samar, as well as Dulag and Alangalang in Leyte, and Gandara in Samar.
Intensity IV tremors were recorded in Abuyog, Palo, and Carigara in Leyte.
Moderate shaking was also felt in wider regions, with intensity III reported in parts of Biliran, southern Leyte, and several towns in the same province, as well as Sorsogon in the Bicol region.
Light tremors extended to more distant areas such as Cebu, Masbate, Iloilo, and Davao Occidental, with intensity levels ranging from I to II.
