OpenAI is moving toward an unprecedented step in the world of smart devices.

The idea of the new phone is based on the use of “artificial intelligence agents.”

New reports and leaks suggest that OpenAI is heading toward an unprecedented step in the world of smart devices by developing consumer-oriented products that include wireless earbuds and a smartphone that relies entirely on artificial intelligence, moving away from the traditional app-based model.

According to a memo issued by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the upcoming project will rely on technical partnerships with MediaTek and Qualcomm to develop the phone’s processor chip, while Luxshare will handle design and manufacturing.

A more flexible experience

The core idea of the new phone is based on the use of “artificial intelligence agents” to perform various tasks instead of relying on applications, which provides a more flexible user experience and reduces the limitations imposed by current operating systems on advanced functions.

Kuo believes that building an integrated system for OpenAI’s smart devices will allow the company to embed artificial intelligence across all features without traditional technical constraints, enhancing its ability to deliver a more advanced and personalized user experience.

With ChatGPT approaching nearly one billion weekly active users, the company’s entry into the consumer hardware market could represent a strategic step to expand its reach and access a broader range of users.

Smart performance

The report also indicates that the upcoming smartphone is expected to be designed to continuously understand user context, combining on-device artificial intelligence models with cloud-based models to handle more complex tasks, ensuring more efficient and intelligent performance.

According to expectations, the device’s specifications and suppliers are likely to be finalized by the end of the year or during the first quarter of 2027, with mass production expected to begin in 2028.
