An unusual incident unfolded in Shantou, Guangdong province, after a woman threw bundles of cash from a high-rise apartment window, triggering chaos and an unexpected street scramble.

Viral videos circulating on Chinese social media platforms show the woman tossing stacks of 1,000 Hong Kong dollar banknotes from the building, drawing the attention of residents and passersby.

Large numbers of people rushed to pick up the scattered cash before police stepped in to recover what they could and restore order at the scene.

Reports said some of those who collected the money later returned it after confirming it was genuine, while police urged others still in possession of the cash to hand it over.

Authorities did not disclose the total amount involved, but eyewitnesses estimated it could be at least HK$1 million (around $128,000).

According to local media reports, the woman was suffering from emotional distress linked to a family member’s illness, though her condition has since stabilized.

Investigations are still ongoing to fully clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
